The Brief

Bidwell House has been home to Bidwells in Cambridge for many years, but the look, feel and layout of the building no longer supported the company’s needs or ways of working.

Having originally been built around a central concrete “spine”, the building was made up of  individual rooms and offices, which created a dark, dated working environment.  Bidwells were keen that their new Headquarters would be light and contemporary, with a much more open, welcoming feel.

They wanted a workplace which would stand-out, embrace agile working and support team collaboration.  It was also important that the new design reflected the company culture, so needed to be fun, approachable and engaging for employees and visiting clients.

The Project

Extensive construction, electrical and mechanical works had to be completed before the COEL design and fit-out team could get to work transforming the interior of the building.  These works, which were overseen by the COEL project management team, included completely stripping out the building and removing all internal walls, constructing an impressive glazed extension and updating electrics, ventilation, air-handling and heating systems.

The Design

Conscious of the client’s needs and wish lists, the team designed a contemporary, completely flexible and agile working environment.

With the exception of the meeting rooms, there are no closed spaces or individual offices and very few employees have a fixed, personal workstation.  Instead you’ll find large open-plan spaces with bench style desking and “touch-down” points.  Standard office seating is available, but so is comfortable, quirky soft seating, providing flexible working options.  There’s also a trendy cafe, a quiet meeting lounge and a large boardroom with folding walls, providing a completely flexible space.  The stylishly welcoming reception area not only provides a comfortable environment for visiting clients, it also doubles up to offer additional informal meeting and working spaces.
